Satellite images of Katrina damage

I have to admit, what with dealing with losing all my possessions and trying to adjust to living with the in-laws and getting used to my new job, I haven't been extraordinarily attentive to the situation in the Gulf. It's been in my periphery--I was aware on an academic level that things were terrible, but I had never truly comprehended.
This totally blew my mind.
Just look at that. Zoom in on it. The houses are like little islands in a sea. Look at the bridge surfacing out of the lake that is New Orleans, then slipping back under the water.
It's horrific.
(And yes, it is much worse than what I've been through, as several people have mentioned.)
I have a friend who was living in Biloxi, MS last I heard. I don't know what the situation is in that city, or even if she is still there. Margaret, I have no idea if you ever read this thing, but if you're out there I'd appreciate a note--I've lost your email address.

People have actually SAID that to you, that it's worse for the Gulf folks? Those sort of comparisons are intellectually juvenile. Pain's pain. Whether you've lost your home; lost a loved one; lost your job; or lost you puppy named Snowball (Guess you missed that bit in the news, too). I think we should just pity those who tell you that because they're not terribly bright, and they'll never know what it's like to be truly bright. So, if your pain isn't as intense as others, surely their thinking isn't. We can therefore reduce their human experience to be less meaningful than that of the smart people, just as they reduce your pain to be less meaningful. I just hope none of them has a small penis, for similar reasons. People suck. PS, I have one of my professional photos up on my website now. It's me in front of Green River. The suit was tailored for me by a little Jewish man here in town. Survived Dachau six years.
Yeah, people have said that. I think they were trying to be comforting.
Nice suit!
I think I heard something about Snowball, but it didn't really sink in...I'm glad they found him, though.
